Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga, who plays for Al Duhail in the Qatar League, is hopeful of securing a first win under new head coach Benni McCarthy when they face Gambia on Thursday in their 2026 World Cup qualifier match in Ivory Coast.
Olunga believes the team has the capability to secure an away victory before returning to the country on Friday to face Gabon at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.
He emphasized the strong relationship between the coach and players, saying it has created a positive team atmosphere.
“Benni McCarthy believes in the players, and everyone is looking forward to these two fixtures. The group is still open for us,” Olunga said.
The striker also acknowledged the threat posed by Gambia, who are coached by former Gor Mahia manager Jonathan McKinstry. He noted that their opponents have quality players and cannot be underestimated.
Kenya currently sits in fourth place in Group F of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with five points, while group leaders Ivory Coast top the standings with 10 points after four matches.
