Sabaki MCA aspirant urges chiefs to stop harassing residents seeking National IDs

Sabaki Ward MCA aspirant Irene Kitala has called on local administrators in Magarini Constituency, Kilifi County, to stop frustrating residents applying for national identity cards ahead of the upcoming general election.

Speaking to the press in the Moi area of Sabaki, Kitala said she has launched an initiative to help residents acquire national IDs to enable them to register as voters. She accused some chiefs of allegedly mistreating and turning away applicants who visit their offices seeking the necessary documentation and approvals.

“There are people who genuinely want identity cards, but when they go to the chief’s office, they are harassed or sent away. We are asking the Deputy County Commissioner to ensure residents are signed and cleared to obtain their IDs. If not, we shall address the matter on the ground,” Kitala said.

She emphasized that all residents deserve equal access to government services without discrimination.

Some beneficiaries of Kitala’s support, led by Mary Mwajinje, expressed gratitude after successfully obtaining their identity cards following long delays.

“Irene has stood with us and ensured we are assisted. We are proud and happy to finally receive our IDs after struggling for a long time. We believe she will continue supporting us,” Mwajinje told journalists.

Magarini Youth Representative Japhet Mwananje also weighed in, urging the Kilifi Governor to intervene in the matter, just as the county leadership addresses other key issues such as education and road infrastructure.

The call comes amid increased efforts by political leaders and community groups to ensure eligible residents secure identification documents in preparation for voter registration.
