Human rights groups demand fresh National Youth Council elections

Human rights lobby groups under the Coast Civil Society Organization Network for Human Rights have given Youth Affairs and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya a 14-day ultimatum to announce a new election date for the National Youth Council (NYC).

Led by Ajenda Kenya in partnership with Siasa Place, the activists accuse the current NYC leadership of overstaying in office and failing to effectively represent youth interests.

The last NYC elections were held in 2013, meaning officials have served for over a decade—far beyond their intended term.

Ajenda Kenya Project Manager Dreda Odiwor criticized the stalled election process, pointing to a February 21st election notice that never materialized.

“The ministry announced elections for February 21st, but nothing happened, and no new date has been set,” Odiwor stated.

Omar Ndegwa from Her Narrative Organization echoed these concerns, demanding a clear election schedule.

“Youths are ready to lead, but the leadership is failing us. CS Mvurya must provide election dates,” Ndegwa said.

As pressure mounts, the Ministry of Youth Affairs has yet to issue an official response. However, activists vow to escalate their campaign, threatening nationwide demonstrations if their demands go unmet.

“The youth are tired of being ignored. If the government does not listen, we will press on,” warned Ndegwa.

Elizabeth Bahati from Help a Brother CBO noted that many officials elected in 2013 are now over 35 years old.

“We want fresh elections so that youth affairs are handled by actual youths,” Bahati insisted.
