Mombasa set to revamp Uhuru Gardens into modern recreation and tourism hub

The Mombasa County Government has unveiled plans to redevelop Uhuru Gardens into a modern public recreational facility aimed at enhancing leisure, wellness, tourism, and community engagement in the city.

With an estimated budget of sh.70 million, the project dubbed “Uhuru Gardens 2.0” seeks to transform the iconic public space into a vibrant destination park catering to families, youth, fitness enthusiasts, and visitors.

Uhuru Gardens in Mombasa set to undergo major redevelopment.

According to the county government, the upgraded facility will feature family picnic zones, expansive green spaces, a modern children’s play park, outdoor gym equipment, and dedicated walking and running tracks.

The redevelopment will also include modern washrooms and nappy-changing facilities, addressing the needs of families and visitors using the park.

In a bid to promote culture and entertainment, the project will incorporate a modern amphitheatre that will host community events, cultural performances, and other public gatherings.

The county government further revealed that a Tourist Information Centre will be established within the park to showcase Mombasa’s tourism attractions and provide information to both local and international visitors.

Other planned improvements include enhanced landscaping, beautification works, and the construction of a secure perimeter wall to improve safety and protect the facility.

County officials said the revamped park is expected to serve as a key public space where residents can exercise, socialize, hold events, and enjoy outdoor recreation in a safe and welcoming environment.

The project forms part of the county’s broader efforts to improve public amenities, promote healthy lifestyles, and enhance the attractiveness of Mombasa as a tourism and investment destination.

Once completed, Uhuru Gardens 2.0 is expected to become one of Mombasa’s premier public parks, offering a modern and inclusive environment for people of all ages.
