Nassir: Coalitions are a reality of modern politics, not party sell-out

ODM Deputy Party Leader and Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir has defended political dialogue and coalition-building, saying alliances are an unavoidable reality of modern politics and should not be mistaken for a betrayal of party ideals.

Speaking during the funeral of former Cabinet minister Cyrus Jirongo in Kakamega, Nassir said political engagement must be guided by respect for differing opinions, noting that no individual or group holds a monopoly over patriotism or political wisdom.

He emphasized that internal debate within ODM should not be criminalized, adding that disagreement does not amount to disloyalty.

“Coalitions are a reality of today’s politics. They are not an abandonment of principle. I will not be lectured for choosing dialogue over theatrics, because every political actor has a right to air their views,” Nassir said.

The Mombasa governor maintained that strengthening the party requires open conversations ahead of the 2027 General Election, insisting he is willing to engage all voices except those that promote division. He dismissed claims that ODM is being “sold,” arguing instead that dialogue is part of consolidating the party’s future while honoring the legacy of inclusive politics championed by the late Jirongo.
