KPA mourns former Managing Director Francis Gichiri Ndua

MOMBASA — The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has paid tribute to its former Managing Director, Francis Gichiri Ndua, following his passing, describing him as a visionary leader who played a pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s maritime sector.

In a condolence message, KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the Board, management, and staff of the Authority, noting that Ndua’s contribution to port development and maritime economics remains unmatched.

“It is with deep sorrow that we have received the sad news following the passing of a monumental figure in Kenya’s maritime sector, our former Managing Director Francis Gichiri Ndua,” Capt. Ruto said. “On behalf of the Board and the entire Kenya Ports Authority family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and to all who had the privilege of working with him.”

Capt. Ruto hailed Mr. Ndua as one of the country’s most distinguished maritime transport economists, lauding his leadership in guiding the Authority through a historic milestone, recording one million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in container traffic for the first time in 2014.

“This achievement was a testament to his strategic foresight, determination, and unwavering commitment to modernization and efficiency,” he said.

On the global stage, Mr. Ndua’s influence was equally remarkable. He became the first elected President of the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH), fifty years after its establishment, a feat Capt. Ruto said elevated Kenya’s standing in international maritime circles.

“His leadership underscored the impact of his work on the continent’s ports and transport economics,” Capt. Ruto added.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Ndua was remembered as a man of wisdom, integrity, and mentorship. After his tenure at KPA, he continued to serve as a consultant and a respected stakeholder, contributing to research and discussions that enhanced Kenya’s visibility in global maritime discourse.

“His legacy extends beyond numbers and titles; it is expressed in the standards of excellence he set, the institutions he helped build, and the many professionals he mentored and inspired,” Capt. Ruto noted.

While mourning his passing, KPA said it will continue to uphold his vision for a modern and competitive port system that supports national and regional growth.

“We remain committed to carrying forward his vision for a modern, competitive, and globally respected port system, as we honor his legacy in every aspect of our work,” Capt. Ruto said.

Ndua served as KPA Managing Director from 2011 to 2016, a period marked by significant modernization and expansion of Kenya’s maritime infrastructure.

“To the Ndua family, we share in your sorrow and stand with you in this difficult time. May you find strength in the memories of a life well lived and in the enduring impact of his contributions to our nation and to the global maritime community,” concluded Capt Ruto.
