MOMBASA – Over 700 runners from Kenya’s Coastal region took part in the Standard Chartered Marathon Mombasa Satellite Run, where Elizabeth Oyengo and Elisha Kipsoi clinched victory in the 21KM women’s and men’s categories respectively.
The race, held at Mama Ngina Waterfront, served as a build-up for the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon 2025, scheduled for Sunday, October 26 at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi.
The satellite run featured three categories, 5KM Family Fun Run, 10KM and 21KM, giving Coastal residents a chance to participate in Kenya’s largest single-day sporting event without traveling to the capital.
“I’m excited that today I’ve achieved my personal best time ever, which marks a big improvement for me,” said Kipsoi after his win. “I’ve been training hard and look forward to participating in major races in the coming years.”
The concept of satellite races was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to enable participants to compete from different locations while avoiding large gatherings. The Mombasa route looped through Docks Roundabout, Fontanella roundabout, and Mogadishu Road, before returning to the Waterfront.
According to David Mwindi, the event’s local organising committee chairperson, the races reflect the marathon’s commitment to promoting fitness and sporting opportunities nationwide.
“Each year, we have seen an increase in participation, motivating us to continue hosting these community-driven events,” he said.
This year’s Nairobi Marathon has drawn support from over 39 sponsors and raised sh.229 million, a 32% increase from sh.173 million in 2024. More than 30,000 runners from 92 nationalities have registered for the race.
Funds raised will support Standard Chartered Kenya’s Futuremakers initiative, which equips youth, women and persons with disabilities with employable skills. The programme aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 8, promoting inclusive economic growth and decent work.
With just a week to go, the 2025 edition is expected to be the largest yet, reaffirming its place as Kenya’s premier international road race.
