A section of Links Road in Nyali, Mombasa will be closed for six months starting Friday, August 1, 2025, to allow for critical drainage and road construction works, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced.
The closure, which affects the busy Quickmart area, will remain in effect until January 30, 2026, as the agency seeks to address persistent flooding and poor drainage that have plagued the Nyali area for years.
“We’ve waited a long time for this, and we’re pleased the repairs are finally beginning. This project will help us resolve the drainage issues that cause flooding every time it rains,” said Daniel Manyala, Mombasa County Executive Committee Member for Transport, Infrastructure, and Governance.

In a public notice, KURA stated that the project aims to provide a lasting solution to drainage problems that have frequently disrupted traffic and compromised road safety along the Links Road corridor.
“To ensure timely completion, we urge motorists to cooperate fully. Those who normally use Links Road, especially around the Quickmart area, will now be required to use Mt. Kenya Road. Police officers and traffic marshals will be deployed to manage traffic flow,” the notice read.
Manyala also revealed that the county is in talks with the contractor of the Mombasa–Malindi highway to extend repairs to the Bombolulu area.
“We know Bombolulu also presents serious challenges, so we want to ensure it remains passable during this period,” he added.
The six-month road project is expected to significantly improve stormwater drainage in the Nyali region once completed.

“Three months ago, the governor met with the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport and agreed to prioritize the repair of Links Road to permanently solve the drainage issue. Following that, KURA conducted public participation forums and shared their plans with residents. Now, the works are finally set to begin,” Manyala said.

In addition to the roadworks, the county government will construct a dedicated cycling lane along Links Road, starting from the Kenol area. The cycling lane will be built concurrently with the road repairs to minimize traffic disruptions.
“As a county, we will continue to work closely with KURA to manage traffic and ensure smooth progress during the construction period,” said the CEC.
