Former Director of Communications to ex-Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, Elkana Jacob, has officially joined the race to succeed Mohammed Ali as the Member of Parliament for Nyali Constituency.
Speaking to Baraka FM, Elkana emphasized the power of the youth and the urgent need to address historical injustices and unequal development in the Coast region.
“What I would like to emphasize is the immense influence and energy of the youth in this region. That’s why we are ready to liberate our community, so that everyone here feels just as Kenyan as anyone from any other part of the country,” he said.
He called for true implementation of devolution, saying residents of the Coast deserve the same quality of services as other Kenyans.
“Whether it’s healthcare, education, or employment, let it be equal and fair across the board. That’s the true spirit of devolution,” Elkana added.
The media professional also expressed concern over the plight of vulnerable groups who remain marginalized due to lack of political connections or financial resources.
“It is deeply disheartening when you meet a widow who owns land and has all the documents, but because she lacks money or connections, she can’t get justice. That’s not the Kenya we want,” he said.
Citing Article 10 of the Constitution, Elkana criticized current leadership for abandoning core national values and called on young people to take charge and usher in change.
“We must end politics of hate, tribalism, religious discrimination, and skin color. We cannot remain stagnant forever. There must be a difference between someone who merely holds office and a true leader,” he said.
Jacob, who gained fame for his investigative journalism exposing crime and drug syndicates in the Coast region, is among a growing number of media personalities transitioning into politics. He previously served in various communications roles under former Nairobi governors Mike Sonko, Ann Kananu, and current governor Johnson Sakaja.
He joins at least seven other aspirants in the race for the Nyali seat, currently held by Mohamed Ali, who is eyeing the Mombasa gubernatorial seat. Other notable contenders include businessman Abdikadir Dekow, political strategist Abdulswamad Ali, and ODM’s Said “Saido” Abdalla, among others.
Jacob and Abdulswamad Ali are among former journalists vying for the seat. In neighboring Mvita, Citizen TV anchor Lulu Hassan has also declared interest, further underscoring the growing influence of media figures in Mombasa’s political landscape.
