Mvita Member of Parliament, Mohamed Soud Machele, has called on the national government to ensure Mombasa youth benefit from job opportunities in the transit train that will be connecting passengers from the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus in Miritini to the Mombasa CBD.
Speaking at RG Ngala Grounds on Monday, Machele asked the Ministry of ICT to deliver the message directly to President William Ruto.
“We have the new MRT train project. Mombasa people must benefit from the job opportunities created by this project. This is not a request, it is a demand. The project is a national asset, yes, but the majority of the workforce should come from Mombasa, especially since the infrastructure is being developed here,” said Machele.
The MP said President William Ruto should direct Kenya Railways Corporation MD to ensure Mombasa youth get the majority of jobs in the train.
“Too often, we see people from outside the region brought in to work on projects, while residents are overlooked. This must change. Mombasa youth need to be prioritized in employment,” said the Mvita legislator.
Machele was speaking during the commissioning of an ICT hub at RG Ngala grounds.
The hub has trained at least 1,000 youths in the past month.
The MP stated that the plan is to establish these ICT hubs in all Mvita wards.
