Public beaches in Mombasa have been reopened following the lifting of a temporary closure that had been announced by Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir on Friday.
In a communique issued by the County Government, Governor Nassir also lifted the suspension on construction activities, citing an updated meteorological review.
“Following the initial advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department warning of strong winds and high waves along the coastal region, the County Government of Mombasa undertook precautionary measures including the temporary closure of public beaches, suspension of marine activities, and halting of construction works to protect lives and property,” the statement read.
The initial advisory had warned of wind speeds reaching up to 25 knots and wave heights of 2 to 2.5 metres. In response, the county temporarily suspended marine operations and construction work, particularly of high-rise buildings, and closed access to public beaches.

However, a new review from the County Director of Meteorological Services now indicates a significant reduction in wind speeds to a maximum of 16 knots and a gradual decrease in wave heights.
“We are now in receipt of an updated review from the County Director of Meteorological Services indicating a significant reduction in wind speeds to a maximum of 16 knots, and a gradual decline in wave heights, based on revised models and direct observation,” the communique stated.
Despite the improved weather conditions, Governor Nassir has advised deep-sea marine operators to remain cautious, as moderate swells may still occur offshore.
“I thank all residents, stakeholders, and visitors for their understanding and cooperation during the period of heightened alert,” said the governor.
