Give us the funds, Sarai tells Ruto over rejected church donations

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Hassan Omar Sarai has called on President William Ruto to redirect church donations that have been rejected to the Muslim community.

Speaking in Mombasa during a Grand Iftar Dinner, the former Mombasa Senator emphasized that the funds could support essential Islamic institutions and teachers.

“If they reject sh. 20 million, give it to us. If they reject sh. 10 million, give it to us Muslims. Our madrassa teachers need salaries, and we need to build more madrassas,” Sarai stated.

The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament urged the president not to insist on giving donations to those who oppose them, saying they should simply be left alone.

“They have land, hospitals, and universities, yet they tell the poor not to accept money from the president. We are ready to receive these funds and any other support available,” he added.

Sarai also criticized those opposing the president’s nominations for various government positions.

“Here in the Coast region, we will not reject anything—whether it’s the air authority, grass authority, or even the authority in charge of ticks. We are ready to take anything that benefits us,” he asserted.

The former Mombasa gubernatorial candidate made these remarks during an Iftar dinner on Sunday, attended by Islamic religious leaders and community members from the Coast region.

Meanwhile, Sarai urged religious leaders to take an active role in guiding the youth, warning against negative influences from social media.

“We are gathered here as Muslims. Let us take our religion seriously and keep politics out of it. We must not allow the internet to dictate our faith,” he cautioned.

“If we do not teach our youth, social media will. It will mislead them into practices we do not want, including homosexuality,” he added.
