Cashless payments boost business for vendors at WRC Safari Rally in Naivasha

Since its return to Kenya in 2021, the WRC Safari Rally has drawn thousands of motorsport fans to Naivasha, transforming the region into a hub of activity. Beyond the adrenaline-fueled races, the event has become a key economic driver, providing opportunities for small businesses, hawkers, and vendors.

For four days, the normally quiet ranches of Naivasha turn into bustling markets as traders sell food, beverages, camping supplies, and souvenirs to rally spectators. However, in an area where cash transactions can be cumbersome, mobile money services such as M-PESA have played a crucial role in facilitating business.

Many vendors say cashless payments have streamlined operations. Samuel Osore, a food vendor in Naivasha who has attended the rally since its return, says mobile transactions have improved efficiency.

“I prefer cashless payments because they save time. With my Lipa Na M-PESA Till, customers can pay quickly, and I don’t have to worry about giving change,” Osore said. “Most people no longer carry cash, so this method is convenient and secure, especially in such a fast-paced environment.”

Leather goods trader Saitoti Kennedy Menga, who traveled from Nairobi, echoed similar sentiments. Selling leather products and traditional hats, he described the rally as a prime business opportunity.

“This is my second year selling here. Rally-goers love these hats, and most prefer paying through M-PESA. It’s easier for me because I don’t have to deal with cash shortages or the hassle of looking for change,” Menga said.

For soft drink vendor John Mwangi from Nakuru, mobile payment services offer additional benefits. “Last year’s business was better due to the economy, but I still value coming here. I encourage customers to use Pochi La Biashara because it prevents transaction reversals and keeps my earnings secure,” he said.

As mobile money transactions become more widespread, vendors at the Safari Rally say the convenience of cashless payments is helping them serve more customers while reducing the risks associated with handling cash.
