The weekend ended in a lavish contest for the highly rated Spanish league top tier LaLiga as the top three teams (Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid) were separated by a point from each other.
Defending champions Real Madrid had a rough start on Sunday against Girona but Luka Modric’s out of the box strike which made the difference before half time and 83rd minute close range finish from Vinicius Junior assured them three points at Santiago Bernabeu in the 2-0 victory, allowing them to close the gap against their rivals Barcelona.
Hansi Flick’s side Barcelona had managed to maintain their winning streak earlier having won 2-0 over Las Palmas on Saturday.
Elsewhere, 11 times LaLiga champions Atletico Madrid made sure they were not left out of the title race as they had a bright start to life against Valencia on Saturday with three unanswered goals from Julian Alvarez, who scored twice, and Angel Correa that were enough to give Diego Simeone’s side an important three points.
Barcelona still controls the table with margin of goal difference against Real Madrid who tie with 54 points separating Atletico Madrid with a single point having played 25 games each.
Real Madrid will face Real Betis while Atletico Madrid will battle against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday before Barcelona winding up the weekend against Real Sociedad on Sunday of 2nd March.
