Speaker Khatri takes aim at Nyali MP Mohamed Ali over divisive politics

Mombasa County Assembly Speaker Aharub Khatri has criticised Nyali MP Mohamed Ali, accusing him of promoting divisive politics that undermine unity and development in the county.

Speaking during a youth engagement forum in Mombasa, Khatri criticized leaders who, he said, mobilise young people using confrontation and identity politics while offering little in terms of employment or empowerment.

Without mincing words, the Speaker urged Mombasa youth to reject political incitement and instead focus on issue-based leadership anchored on development and accountability.

He warned young people against being mobilised for political agendas that do not translate into lasting economic gains, saying incitement and inflammatory language only deepen social divisions.

“Mombasa belongs to all of us. There are no outsiders here,” Khatri said, in remarks seen as a rebuttal to political narratives that frame communities along ethnic or territorial lines.

He further linked divisive politics to the rise of insecurity, drug abuse and youth conflicts, saying irresponsible political messaging fuels lawlessness and instability.

Khatri urged residents of Nyali and the wider Mombasa County to reject politics based on hostility and instead support issue-based leadership focused on development, service delivery and inclusion.

The Speaker also highlighted ongoing efforts to empower youth through documentation drives and support for passport processing, saying leadership should be measured by concrete interventions rather than inflammatory speeches.

Khatri concluded by calling for calm, unity and accountability, warning that leaders who divide communities ultimately weaken the county’s social fabric.

In a direct appeal to young people, the Speaker urged them to register as voters, saying political power begins with participation in the electoral process.
