Mombasa County Assembly Speaker Aharub Khatri has called on young people in the county to embrace discipline, unity and responsible conduct, saying these values are critical in opening doors to employment and development opportunities.
Speaking after Team Discipline walk movement from Nyali to Mama Ngina, Khatri emphasized that discipline is the single most important quality leaders look for when identifying young people for jobs, training and other opportunities.
“There is nothing more important than discipline. What you do as young people is what builds your future,” he told the gathering.
The Speaker noted that youth groups drawn from Nyali, Kisauni and other parts of the county had demonstrated commendable discipline during their movement across town, pointing out that no cases of phone theft or disorder were reported.
He said such conduct builds trust and shows that young people can be relied upon, adding that leaders closely observe discipline when selecting candidates for employment opportunities.
Khatri warned against criminal behaviour, drug abuse and territorial conflicts among youth, describing them as destructive habits that derail progress and harm the image of Mombasa.
“We are all human beings. There are no outsiders here. Mombasa belongs to all of us,” he said, calling for unity and peaceful coexistence.
The Speaker highlighted cases where disciplined youth had previously secured jobs, saying respect and good conduct often open doors even before formal qualifications are considered.
He also urged youth to regularize their documentation, including national identification cards, voter cards and passports, noting that officials from Huduma Centre were present to facilitate registration.
Meanwhile, the County Assembly Speaker together with Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki announced plans to support at least 100 youth to process passports, describing the initiative as a step towards expanding opportunities beyond the county.
In addition, he encouraged young people to form and register organized groups, explaining that structured groups are easier to support when employment opportunities, training programs or funding become available.
Khatri singled out a young athlete, Ashraf, for national-level achievement during the bodybuilding championships, citing him as an example of how discipline, consistency and focus can yield positive results.
