The Mjambere Level 3 Hospital in Kisauni Sub-County is now 85 per cent complete and is expected to be operational early next year, a development set to significantly improve access to healthcare services and ease pressure on referral hospitals in Mombasa County.
Once operational, the facility will reduce congestion at major referral hospitals such as Makadara by offering essential medical services closer to residents, cutting travel time and improving emergency response for the densely populated Mjambere area and its surroundings.
The hospital is expected to provide a wide range of services, including comprehensive maternity care, outpatient services and general medical check-ups, as well as child immunisation and paediatric care. These services are aimed at addressing some of the most urgent healthcare needs at the community level, particularly maternal and child health.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony in January this year, Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir said the hospital would transform healthcare delivery in the region by bringing quality services closer to the people.
“This vital project is a testament to the power of collaboration and a shared vision for a healthier Mombasa. It reinforces our commitment to ensuring accessible and quality healthcare for all,” Governor Nassir said at the time.
Residents have welcomed the near completion of the facility, saying it will end years of reliance on far-off hospitals, especially during emergencies. Community members noted that previously, patients had to travel long distances to access services at Makadara, a challenge that often put lives at risk during medical emergencies and disease outbreaks.
Beyond healthcare, locals say the hospital is already acting as a catalyst for development in the area. Residents anticipate the creation of job opportunities, improved road infrastructure, better security through street lighting, and the growth of small businesses once the facility becomes operational.
The hospital has also been praised for its expected inclusivity, with residents highlighting its importance for mothers, people living with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups who often face barriers in accessing timely healthcare.
With construction nearing completion, the Mjambere Level 3 Hospital is expected to play a key role in decongesting referral hospitals while ensuring residents can access dignified, efficient, and quality medical care within their own community.
