Taita Taveta County convened an inception meeting to develop a county mining and value addition policy.
The County government, in partnership with Transparency International-Kenya, brought together mining sector technocrats who contributed to shaping the crucial document for the county.
Speaking during the meeting, County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Physical Planning, Mining and Urban Development Christine Zighe, said the county has yet to fully reap from its abundant mineral resources because of policy gaps. She emphasized that the policy will promote sustainable development, protect the environment and ensure mining activities benefit local communities from present and future generations.
“The county has not fully benefited from its resources due to the policy gap. With this document, we will secure benefits from mineral resources for both present and future generations,” she explained.
She further stated that the policy will give clarity to investors and enhance revenue collection. The department’s chief officer Jimmy Mtawa, echoed her sentiments saying the document will drive growth in the mining sector.
Regional Mining Officer Thomas Kipngeny, assured that the State Department for Mining will continue offering professional and technical guidance as the county develops the policy, which is still in its initial stage.
