The railway transport sector is set for a major boost with the launch of the new Mombasa Commuter Service, expected to ferry more than 4,000 passengers daily.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said the project is complete and now awaits official commissioning by President William Ruto on September 17.

Speaking to the media after inspecting the infrastructure in Mombasa, the CS noted that commuters will pay a subsidised fare of KSh 50 from Mombasa Island to the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus.

“This project is a game changer for Mombasa residents and the Coast region at large. Test runs have been successful, and we are ready for the official launch,” Chirchir said.

He was accompanied by his Principal Secretary, Mohammed Daghar, and senior officials from Kenya Railways. Chirchir reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving public transport across the country.

The service will particularly benefit passengers travelling to Nairobi via the Madaraka Express, as well as residents of Shimanzi, Changamwe, Miritini, and Mazeras.

In addition to easing travel, the project is expected to spur economic growth, with small traders poised to start businesses along the commuter route.
