Fisherfolk in Malindi, Kilifi County, are calling on the government to directly involve them in the distribution of fishing equipment, claiming that only a few individuals currently benefit.
Speaking to the media, they accused local leaders and cooperative societies (SACCOs) of sidelining them.
“You’ll hear that equipment has been given to women or relatives of officials, but we don’t receive anything,” said Mohamed Omar, one of the fisherfolk.
His sentiments were echoed by Ali Twaha, who said they are being exploited for the benefit of a few leaders.
“We are suffering. We are only remembered when it’s convenient for some people,” he said.
The fisherfolk have appealed to the government to provide them with modern fishing equipment to improve their safety and efficiency at sea.
“Some of our colleagues have lost their lives because we still rely on traditional fishing methods,” added Twaha.
They also urged well-wishers to donate equipment directly to them rather than through intermediaries, saying this would ensure fair distribution.
