Equity Afya opens new branch in Kilifi

Equity Afya has officially launched its newest outpatient medical facility in Kilifi town, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s mission to provide accessible, quality, and affordable healthcare services across the country.

The new center, located in the heart of Kilifi, becomes the 134th Equity Afya branch nationwide, the second in Kilifi County after Malindi, and the 10th in the larger Coast region.

Speaking during the launch, Dr. Harrison Genya, the physician in charge at the new Kilifi center, said the facility aims to bridge the health access gap in the region.

“This journey started two years ago, and we are excited to finally open this center to serve the people of Kilifi. Our goal is to make healthcare affordable and accessible for everyone,” he said.

“We offer a wide range of services, including consultation with qualified doctors, pharmacy, nursing, dental care, laboratory tests, maternal and child healthcare, eye care, imaging such as ultrasound, and even physiotherapy and nutrition services,” he added.

Dr. Genya added that many of the tests and procedures that previously forced Kilifi residents to travel elsewhere will now be available locally, thanks to the facility’s modern diagnostic capacity.

Equity Afya clinics are operated by Equity Group Foundation, the social arm of Equity Bank, and are primarily staffed by beneficiaries of the Equity Leadership Program, a mentorship initiative that supports young medical professionals to serve in community-based health centers.

Dr. Dennis Ogolla, Managing Director at Equity Afya, highlighted the organization’s national and regional expansion, saying:

“We are present in every county in Kenya, and we have now started expanding into sub-counties. Equity Afya is the largest private outpatient network in the country. We’ve also established five branches in the Democratic Republic of Congo and are eyeing the wider East and Central African region.”

Dr. Ogolla also announced upcoming plans to launch a low-cost health insurance product aimed at making medical coverage more accessible to Kenyans. Additionally, the franchise model will empower doctors to open clinics through financing solutions for essential equipment like ultrasound machines and ECGs.

Representing the county government, Kilifi County Secretary Catherine Kenga lauded Equity Afya’s entry into the county as a strategic investment that aligns with the county’s development priorities.

“This is more than a ribbon-cutting ceremony. It’s a call to action to forge partnerships that uplift lives and close service delivery gaps,” said Kenga.

“Your decision to invest in Kilifi signals trust in our people and positions the county as ready for business, innovation, and sustainable development,” she added.

Kenga reiterated the county government’s commitment to working with the private sector to improve healthcare outcomes for Kilifi residents and welcomed further collaboration with Equity Afya.

The opening of the Kilifi center is expected to ease the burden on public health facilities, provide dignified care closer to communities, and create job opportunities for healthcare workers in the region.
