Safaricom (NSE: SCOM) has announced a sh.3 million sponsorship to support four young Kenyan professional golfers through the Professional Golfers Association of Kenya (PGK) programme.
The four, Mutahi Kibugu (Nyeri Golf Club), Mohit Mediratta (Sigona Golf Club), Samuel Njoroge (Railways Golf Club), and Matthew Wahome (Nyali Golf & Country Club), will form Team Safaricom, representing the telco in the Equator Tour and other PGK-sanctioned tournaments.
“At Safaricom, we believe in transforming lives by championing the passions of Kenyans. As we celebrate 25 years of impact, we are proud to partner with PGK and invest KES 3 million to support four talented professionals through the Equator Tour and the Player Development Plan,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.
“Our goal is to create a sustainable pathway for aspiring golfers in Kenya, one that inspires, empowers, and equips them to compete at the highest levels,” he added.

The three-year partnership is not just financial; it includes long-term development support to help the golfers thrive in their careers. The initiative aligns with Safaricom’s broader commitment to nurturing local talent and expanding opportunities for youth in sports.
“It’s exciting to be part of Team Safaricom,” said Mutahi Kibugu, one of the sponsored golfers.
“We are a group of young and promising individuals who have already made history and are destined for greater achievements both locally and internationally. This programme gives us a vital opportunity to sharpen our skills and compete on global stages.”
The sponsorship is rooted in PGK’s Player Development Plan (PDP), a structured mentorship and training program designed to help emerging golfers develop the discipline, skills, and exposure needed for competitive success.
Through the PDP, the selected players will receive tailored mentorship, regular performance evaluations, and consistent access to professional circuits, creating a clear pathway for long-term growth.
This investment further reflects Safaricom’s commitment to youth empowerment and talent development in sports, in line with the company’s mission of Transforming Lives.
