Over 200,000 mangrove trees planted through Absa-SARICODO partnership

A partnership between Absa Kenya Foundation and the Sabaki River Conservation and Development Organization (SARICODO) has led to the planting of over 200,000 mangrove trees in the Sabaki area of Magarini sub-county, Kilifi County.

The initiative, aimed at environmental conservation and the restoration of mangrove forests, is part of a broader effort to combat climate change and boost marine ecosystems. According to SARICODO founder Joseph Mwadenge, the project is already making an impact in reversing mangrove degradation and improving fish production, which had been in steady decline.

“This initiative focuses on bringing back the mangrove forest that has been declining,” said Mwadenge during a recent tree planting exercise. “The planted trees are projected to absorb nine tons of carbon.”

Absa Kenya Foundation’s Finance Director Yusuf Omar emphasized that the initiative aligns with the foundation’s goal of planting ten million trees by 2032. He noted that the effort complements the Kenyan government’s ambitious target to plant 10 billion trees within the same period.

“We are committed to enhancing forest cover. The government has been at the forefront in championing the growth of trees throughout the country,” Omar said.

The mangrove reforestation project is also being rolled out in other parts of the coastal region, including Jomvu Kuu in Mombasa County and Majoreni in Kwale County.
