Wanyama recalled as McCarthy names provisional squad

Harambee Stars head coach Bennie McCarthy has unveiled his provisional squad for the upcoming international friendlies against Chad, set to be played in Morocco.

In a surprising move, the squad includes former captain Victor Wanyama, marking a potential return to international duty after his retirement in 2021.

McCarthy, the South African tactician who took over the national team recently, has yet to clarify the reasoning behind Wanyama’s unexpected recall. The veteran midfielder’s inclusion has sparked widespread speculation and excitement among fans and pundits alike.

The provisional squad also features a host of fresh faces, with coast-based side Bandari FC earning notable recognition. The Mombasa club has contributed five players: top scorer Beja Nyamawi, goalkeeper Farouk Shikalo, defenders Siraj Mohammed and Swaleh Pamba, and midfielder David Sakwa.

Kenya Police FC and Gor Mahia each had three players selected. Kenya Police’s representatives include star winger Mohammed Bajaber, fullback Daniel Sakari, and seasoned defender Aboud Omar. From Gor Mahia, Ben Stanley, Alphonce Onyango, and Alphonce Omija made the cut.

The friendlies are expected to serve as a testing ground for McCarthy’s new strategies and provide a glimpse into the potential future of the national team under his leadership.
