Kenyan sugarcane farmers to earn more as cane prices increase

Sugarcane farmers across Kenya are set to earn more following a decision by the Kenya Sugar Board to raise the official cane price from Sh5,300 to Sh5,500 per tonne.

In a directive to all 15 licensed millers—including newly leased state-owned factories—Principal Secretary Dr. Kipronoh Ronoh emphasized the need for strict adherence to the new minimum price.

Dr. Ronoh also directed all millers to ensure timely payments to farmers, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding farmer welfare and improving livelihoods in sugarcane-growing regions.

The price adjustment is part of broader, ongoing reforms aimed at revitalizing the sugar industry and ensuring fair compensation for farmers.

The revised rate, approved by the Cane Pricing Committee, will take effect on May 26, 2025.
