Mombasa County receives 8 speed guns in road safety push

Mombasa County traffic police will soon begin using speed guns to enforce speed limits and enhance road safety across the region.

This follows the donation of eight state-of-the-art laser speed guns by the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), an implementing partner of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS).

“Recognizing the shortage of speed enforcement tools in Mombasa, GRSP has procured and handed over eight of the latest laser speed guns to the county’s traffic police. These advanced devices will significantly aid in improving road safety,” said GRSP Senior Road Policing Officer Artur Zawadzki.

The new equipment will be distributed to all traffic bases across the county.

“They are the most advanced devices currently available, equipped with sophisticated features. I’m confident they will contribute to safer roads in Mombasa,” Zawadzki added.

Before deployment, Mombasa traffic officers will undergo a two-day training session on how to operate the new equipment effectively.

“Speed control is one of the most critical elements in ensuring road safety, as it directly affects both the risk of a crash and the severity of its consequences,” said Dan Manyala, Mombasa County Executive Committee Member for Transport and Infrastructure.

According to police crash records, 94 people lost their lives in road accidents in Mombasa in 2023. A separate survey conducted during the festive season revealed that only 1% of drivers in the county are aware of the designated speed limits in different areas.
