New Huawei ICT Academy at Konza to accelerate digital skills and health innovation

In a major step toward accelerating Kenya’s digital transformation, Huawei Kenya, the Equity Group Foundation, and the Open University of Kenya (OUK), the country’s first digital-first university, have officially launched the Huawei ICT Academy at OUK.

The initiative aims to equip over 10,000 learners with globally competitive digital skills and foster innovation across key sectors, including education, health, agriculture, and fintech.

Strategically situated at Konza Technopolis, the country’s flagship smart city and innovation hub, the Huawei ICT Academy positions the Open University of Kenya as a trailblazer in accessible, technology-driven education.

The Academy will offer flexible, self-paced online courses in high-demand areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Networking, and Software Development. Learners will receive dual certification, combining academic credentials from OUK with Huawei’s internationally recognized industry certifications, to boost both employability and entrepreneurship, especially among youth in underserved communities.

A key feature of the Academy is the establishment of a Virtual Innovation Hub, where students will collaborate on real-world technology solutions tailored to challenges in agriculture, education, healthcare, and financial inclusion.

“This partnership exemplifies our shared commitment to nurturing Kenya’s digital talent. By launching the Academy at OUK within Konza Technopolis, we’re aligning with the country’s vision for innovation, inclusion, and long-term prosperity,” said Gavin Gao, CEO of Huawei Kenya.

The initiative also integrates digital health transformation through the Equity Group Foundation’s health programs, including telemedicine services to improve healthcare delivery in remote and underserved regions. These efforts are part of the Foundation’s broader Creating Shared Value (CSV) strategy.

“We are scaling access to global tech skills, especially for youth who might otherwise be excluded from the digital revolution. Through this partnership, we are building an inclusive, innovative workforce equipped to transform Kenya and Africa,” said Dr. James Mwangi, Chancellor of OUK and Executive Chairman of Equity Group Foundation.

Prof. Elijah Omwenga, Vice Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya, noted that the location of the Academy at OUK reflects a broader mission to democratize higher education.

“With Huawei’s technical leadership and Equity’s social impact vision, we’re unlocking new futures for learners across the country,” said Prof. Omwenga.

This collaboration brings together the strengths of the private sector, academia, and development organizations to create a scalable and inclusive model for digital skills development, one that is firmly aligned with national priorities.
