The government is set to release approximately sh.21 billion capitation funds to public schools next week, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced.
Speaking during an Education Conference in Naivasha, Ogamba said the funds will assist school administrators in planning for the second term, which began this week.
“I urge you to closely monitor the use of government funds disbursed to schools to ensure they are utilized properly,” he emphasized.
The CS acknowledged that capitation funds are sometimes delayed due to stiff competition for limited government resources and delays in Exchequer releases.
“About 30 percent of the national budget is typically allocated to the education sector. However, some government-funded programs are extremely costly, which can delay the timely disbursement of capitation,” he explained.
Ogamba also cautioned school heads against imposing unauthorized levies on learners, stressing that the Ministry does not permit any charges outside those outlined in its policies.
In addition, the CS directed education officers to promptly investigate any cases of alleged financial malpractice.
“The Ministry has, on some occasions, been accused of disbursing capitation funds to ghost schools or non-existent learners in both primary and secondary institutions,” he said.
