A section of activists in Mombasa County is calling on the government to create more employment opportunities as a way to curb the rising cases of insecurity in the Coast region.

Speaking to the media in Mombasa on Wednesday, the human rights defenders emphasized that job creation is key to keeping youth away from criminal activities.

Mary Oyier, Executive Director of One Nation Under God (ONUG) Pwani, said the government must take decisive action if it is serious about fighting insecurity.

“It is important for the government to come up with employment opportunities if it is determined to combat insecurity,” Oyier stated.

She added that idleness among youth contributes significantly to crimes such as robbery and thuggery.

“Idleness is the root of many evils, including violent crime,” she said.

Oyier also urged parents to play a more active role in guiding their children.

“Parents should play their part. An idle mind is the devil’s workshop,” she noted.

Additionally, the human rights advocate called on the Ministry of Interior to ensure police officers are deployed to serve in their respective home counties.

“Police officers should be posted in their areas,” she emphasized.
