Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) has flagged off 12 cadets selected for a one-year sea-time training program with global shipping company CMA CGM.

According to BMA, this is a major step toward unlocking Kenya’s maritime potential and bridging the long-standing gap between graduation and the mandatory sea-time experience required for full seafaring certification.

The Academy has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all graduates gain the essential sea-time training through strategic partnerships with both international and local shipping lines.

BMA CEO Dr. Eric Katana emphasized that the Academy has made bold strides in demystifying access to sea-time opportunities, historically a major challenge for many aspiring seafarers.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony at the Academy, Dr. Katana stated, “We are not only opening up pathways but also restoring hope and direction to our graduates.”

To ensure equal access to these opportunities, BMA has established and maintains an up-to-date alumni database.

“From this pool, the current group of cadets was selected, ensuring fairness, merit, and alignment with the profession’s demands,” he explained.

The selection process involved multiple assessment stages, guided by objective criteria and overseen by BMA professionals.

“I am proud to say this process was transparent and inclusive, and the final selection represents the very best of what BMA has to offer,” Dr. Katana added.

He further noted that the partnership with CMA CGM not only creates vital opportunities for cadets but also affirms the shipping company’s commitment to nurturing maritime talent in Kenya and the region.

“Today is more than a ceremonial flag-off—it is a testament to transparency, diligence, and meritocracy,” he concluded.

Cadets were encouraged to embrace the opportunity with humility, discipline, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
