More than 21,000 students from the country’s 483 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres are set to sit for the 2025 Trade Test Exams this April, according to the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).

NITA stated that the growing number of candidates reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to equip youth with practical skills that can create employment opportunities both locally and internationally.

Speaking at the official launch of the exams at Dzitsoni Technical Vocational Training Centre in Kilifi County, Principal Secretary for the Department of Labour and Skills Development, Shadrack Mwadime, said the assessments are key to enhancing employability.

“These exams are crucial in helping our youth secure jobs, not just within the country, but also abroad,” Mwadime said.

He also noted that NITA would issue certificates to individuals with work experience in various fields, even if they have not formally enrolled in TVET institutions.

“Theory makes up only 10% of the exam. The focus is on practicals, where students are assessed on the hands-on skills they have acquired,” he added.

Mwadime highlighted the government’s efforts to protect Kenyan workers abroad by signing bilateral agreements on labor rights with foreign nations.

“With support from the Parliamentary Labour Committee, we plan to deploy Labour Attachés, following the example of countries like the Philippines,” he said.

He also issued a stern warning to unscrupulous employment and travel agencies, revealing that over 500 licenses had already been revoked by the department.

NITA Chairman Aden Ali Noor emphasized that the trade test exams are administered three times a year—in April, August, and December.

“The certificates we issue are recognized internationally and are accredited through a UK-based system,” Noor said.
