Wundanyi Member of Parliament Danson Mwashako has asked the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) to address the issue of wildlife encroachment in the area.

Speaking in Mwatate, Mwashako said for a long time they have had to deal with invasion from all kinds of wildlife.

Mwashako said 60% of Wundanyi constituency is lowlands where there’s wildlife like Lions, Elephants and other wild animals.

However, he said in the highlands where most residents engage in farming, their biggest problem is invasion by Monkeys.

“Last time I checked with KWS the population of Monkeys was higher than that of humans in Wundanyi,” said Mwashako.

Mwashako asked KWS to find a way to resolve the issue terming it as a serious one that has dealt a big blow to the safety of residents.

“These Monkeys don’t fear women and children and it has now become a security risk for them,” added Mwashako.

Mwashako also said in a bid to find solutions, at one point he proposed in parliament that KWS rangers be allowed to kill the monkeys but that option was ruled out, it was, however, recommended that the monkeys be moved.

“In India, monkeys were shot with family planning injections and this helped reduce the population by half in 10 years, if we can do that maybe we will have helped the people in the highlands,” said the legislator.

Farmers in Wundanyi have for a long time complained about invasion by monkeys in their farms leaving destruction and causing losses.
