Education Ministry integrates sports into Competency-Based Curriculum

The Education Ministry has stated that it has integrated sports into the education system as the country transitions to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos emphasized the importance of sports, saying it is vital.

Migos further pointed out that the Ministry would provide the necessary infrastructure in all schools across the country to allow learners to compete fairly.

The CS noted that this year, the government has also mainstreamed students with special needs, who are now participating in the program alongside other students.

“The government is working to ensure there is no discrimination against any student. I encourage parents of learners with special needs to allow their children to participate in the games,” he said.

He noted that the Ministry will ensure the entire sports system is integrated for all learners, as sports is a critical component of CBC.

Migos further added that sponsors and partners have come on board to watch the games, providing an opportunity for talented children to receive sponsorships.

“Scouts are around, watching to see what the students are doing so they can recruit them for their clubs. The Rugby Federation is handling the rugby section,” he said.

The CS was speaking in Mombasa during the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) sports and games event.

He said: “Sports is an encouraging space the government has provided for students to showcase their talents. The talent exists, but inadequate facilities are a big blow to schools.”

Among the games played were rugby, basketball, handball, swimming, hockey, and athletics.
