If you are planning to cross the Nyali bridge tomorrow morning, then do so before 7:00 am.

The county government plans to close the bridge for one hour on Wednesday, 9th April, prior to the planned controlled demolition of the unsafe nine-storey building on Abdel Nasser Road in the Corner ya Kilifi area.

Speaking to members of the fourth estate, Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir said the county had put up measures to ensure public safety during the planned controlled demolition scheduled for 8:00 a.m.

Among the measures is the one-hour closure of the Nyali bridge before the commencement of the controlled demolition.

“In accordance with international safety standards for explosive demolition, a 1.2-kilometer radius from the site must be fully vacated,” said Governor Nassir.

“This radius extends from Digo Road to Hospital Road, Jomo Kenyatta Road to Mwembe Tayari to Kava Shibu Road, Faza Road to Kisauni Road, Tononoka Road to Muslim Road, and Tana Street to Wajir Road, stretching up to Solomon Castle Hotel and Ronald Ngala Road. The oceanic extension of this radius requires full cooperation from all Beach Management Units operating in nearby waters,” he added.

The county has also evacuated patients from Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH), which is within the 1.2-kilometer radius set by the county for evacuation.

“Of the 504 patients at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, 380 are set for discharge. The remaining 124, including 8 in intensive care, are being relocated to Utange and Port Reitz Hospitals. Ambulances from the County Government, Kenya Red Cross, and the Kenya Navy are on standby,” said the County Chief.

“This precautionary measure is undertaken solely to safeguard lives and ensure a controlled and injury-free operation. All County emergency response staff currently on leave are hereby recalled with immediate effect,” he added.
