More than 200 families were left homeless after the demolition of their houses in the Gazi area of Msambweni, Kwale County.
The demolition happened on Monday, April 7, 2025, under the supervision of security officers.
Residents say they did not receive any notification before the demolition.
The residents, led by Jawabu Abdalla, said they had been living in that area as squatters, and the government had already set aside more than 300 acres of land for them.
“We cannot live like this, considering that this is a rainy season. Where will we go?” he posed.
Abdalla criticized the government, saying it does not consider them.
“What kind of government is this? We do not have a Senator, Governor, Member of County Assembly nor Member of Parliament,” he said.
His sentiments were echoed by Emmanuel Kahindi, a resident of Gazi.
“We will not vacate from this area, we have been living here and we will continue to live here,” said Kahindi.
Kahindi wants the government to intervene.
