The Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security, Kipchumba Murkomen, has directed security agencies to arrest leaders sponsoring criminal gangs across the country.
Speaking at a security forum in Mombasa, Murkomen stated that reports from security agencies have shown that some leaders, especially political aspirants, are linked to the sponsorship of criminal gangs.
He said this situation threatens the country’s security, adding that the government will not tolerate such behavior.
“We will not tolerate these leaders continuing to jeopardize the nation’s security. This is a serious threat, and appropriate actions must be taken,” Murkomen said.
Additionally, Murkomen emphasized that the government is keen on guiding youth into beneficial programs as a way to divert them from engaging in criminal activities.
“The government has strategies in place to guide the youth into productive activities to keep them away from criminal gangs,” he stated.
The CS noted that the government has put measures in place to combat and curb criminal gangs nationwide.
“We will not allow these criminal gangs to terrorize our citizens. We are giving orders for severe actions against anyone found to be involved in criminal activities,” he said.
He also assured the public that the government would not permit these gangs to invade social spaces, adding that members of these gangs would be apprehended and face legal consequences.
On another note, the Interior Cabinet Secretary said the government had managed to rescue five chiefs who were abducted by Al-Shabaab militants in Mandera County.
He said the chiefs are now in the safe hands of Kenyan soldiers.
Murkomen added that the rescue was the result of a coordinated effort by the national government, the county government, and local leaders.
“We managed to rescue the five abducted chiefs. That is the result of the commitment made by the government and local leaders,” he said.
