Lamu farmers benefit from certified seeds from county gov’t

More than 35,000 farmers from the 10 wards in Lamu County have received free certified maize, cowpeas, and green gram seeds from the County Government of Lamu.

The flag‑off ceremony was presided over by Lamu Governor Issa Timmamy at Mpeketoni Agricultural Training Centre.

He noted that the seed distribution will be rolled across all the wards over the coming week, highlighting Lamu’s untapped potential for commercial-scale harvests.

He, however, identified the lack of quality seeds and outdated farming practices as the primary barriers to higher yields.

“By providing certified seeds and promoting modern agronomic methods, we aim to enhance food production, commercialize maize farming, and significantly boost farmers’ incomes,” he said.

On his part, Agriculture County Executive Committee Member James Gichu added that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve agricultural productivity, achieve food sufficiency, and strengthen nutrition security in the county.

He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to subsidized ploughing services, ensuring that all farmers benefit from mechanized land preparation.

“We are committed as a county to ensure that farmers benefit from mechanisation plans by the county,” he noted.
