Drug abuse activists in the Coast region are urging the government to take immediate action to address the rising issue of drug abuse in the area.
Activists argue that drug-related problems are particularly prevalent along the Mombasa-Malindi-Lamu road.
Anti-drug activist Famau Mohamed Famau emphasized the need for decisive measures to combat drug trafficking in the coastal region.
“There is a steady increase in drug use along the Mombasa-Malindi-Lamu road. This issue needs urgent attention,” Famau stated.
He further highlighted that drug abuse is widespread along the coastline, attributing the crisis to drug barons who continue to fuel the illegal trade.
“The coastline is the most affected area. Drug barons are responsible for this growing problem,” he asserted.
Famau also pointed out that drug traffickers have significantly contributed to the increasing rates of substance abuse across the entire Coast region.
A baseline survey conducted by NACADA in May 2016 revealed that Mombasa County bears a high burden of alcohol and drug abuse. The report further stated that 45.2% of Coastal residents have used substances of abuse at some point in their lifetime, with Kilifi County recording the highest prevalence at 55.9%.
Activists are calling for enhanced government intervention, stricter enforcement of drug laws, and increased public awareness campaigns to curb the growing menace.
