The Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH) has released a report concerning a patient who allegedly committed suicide at the hospital.
CGTRH Executive Director Iqbal Khandwalla stated that the patient was a homeless individual admitted to the facility for the treatment of septic arthritis. He emphasized that the patient was progressing well under medical care and had not yet been discharged.
Khandwalla dismissed claims that the patient had an unpaid hospital bill. He also noted that the individual had a known history of mental illness, which had been documented by both the medical team and local authorities.
“Throughout his admission, our staff—including mental health professionals—provided counseling and psychosocial support as part of his care plan,” said Khandwalla.
Despite the hospital team’s best efforts, the patient tragically took his own life. “This deeply saddens us all, especially those who had come to know and care for him during his time in the hospital,” Khandwalla added.
He further stated that the matter has been formally reported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and is currently under active investigation.
Khandwalla reaffirmed CGTRH’s commitment to the compassionate care of all individuals, regardless of their background or social status. He emphasized that the hospital will continue working closely with community agencies and law enforcement to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable patients.
