Residents of Kilifi County have been encouraged to invest more in coconut farming due to its vast potential.

Speaking to residents of Rabai Constituency, Kilifi County Deputy Governor Flora Mbetsa Chibule highlighted the economic benefits of coconut farming, emphasizing that the tree provides multiple products.

“The coconut is a versatile fruit—it produces juice, which, when fermented, becomes palm wine. It can also be pressed to extract coconut oil,” Chibule explained.

She also defended the production of palm wine, asserting that it should not be classified as illicit alcohol.

“Palm wine may be alcoholic, but it does not have harmful effects. Has anyone ever gone blind from drinking it? Aren’t those who drink it still able to work and provide for their families?” she questioned.

Chibule urged security agencies in the county to allow palm wine tappers to conduct their business without interference, noting that it is a legitimate source of livelihood for many families.

However, she advised operators of palm wine establishments, commonly known as ‘Mangwe,’ to adhere to the stipulated operating hours.
