Residents of Kaliangombe in Rabai Sub-county, Kilifi County, have staged a protest against what they claim is environmental pollution caused by some investors operating in the area.
Led by their chairman, Tsimba Mkamba, the residents accused the investors of engaging in mining activities that have significantly impacted the local community.
“We have submitted a petition to the Deputy County Commissioner’s office, outlining our grievances that we believe should be addressed,” Mkamba said.
He further alleged that several Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects meant for Kaliangombe had been diverted to other areas.
“We have presented an 11-point grievance agenda to the sub-county administration,” he added.
Kaliangombe Leader’s Secretary, Said Charo, echoed these concerns, highlighting the increasing dust pollution caused by mining operations.
“The dust problem has become a serious issue for the locals. We demand an immediate solution,” Charo stated. He also emphasized the need for the investor to fulfill CSR obligations to benefit the local community.
In response, Rabai Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Lenkarie acknowledged the residents’ concerns and assured them that a meeting would be held before the end of March to address the issue.
“We need to assess whether these companies are operating within the law and if they have the necessary licenses,” Lenkarie said.
