The government has been urged to empower women living with disabilities to help them earn a living.

Speaking to the media, Emily Juma, a representative of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) at the Pwani Social Justice Centre, stated that a significant number of women with special needs face double challenges compared to other women in society.

Juma noted that women with disabilities are often exposed to gender-based violence (GBV) and injustices, calling on the government to provide more support for them.

“We are discriminated against in society. Most women with disabilities end up begging because no one is willing to support them,” Juma said.

She emphasized the need for the government to offer employment opportunities to women with disabilities to ease the burden of feeding their families.

Juma stressed that they have the potential to work just like anyone else and should not be excluded from government appointments.

Furthermore, she urged persons with disabilities to seek their rights through the designated offices actively.

“It’s time for us to raise our voices and address our problems so that we can receive the support we need from the government,” Juma stated.

“Disability is not inability. Let all persons with disabilities embrace their condition and fight for their rights,” she added.
