The Kenya Wildlife Service has embarked on an ambitious translocation of zebras and other species to Shimba Hills National Reserve in Kwale County.

According to the Service, the translocation is part of a bold and strategic move to restore wildlife populations and boost tourism.

“This initiative aligns with the KWS Strategic Plan 2024-2028, which prioritizes habitat restoration, biodiversity conservation, and human-wildlife conflict mitigation, while also contributing to Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) by enhancing ecotourism and improving local livelihoods,” said KWS on their social media platforms.

92 zebras had been successfully captured and translocated from Tsavo West National Park to Shimba Hills National Reserve as of Tuesday 11th March 2025.3.12

“With the translocation in progress, KWS remains committed to ensuring a thriving Shimba Hills ecosystem while promoting conservation and sustainable development,” said KWS.

Wildlife translocation plays a crucial role in conservation and habitat restoration by:
✅Balancing ecosystems – Preventing overpopulation in certain areas while revitalizing depleted habitats.
✅Reducing human-wildlife conflict – Relocating animals from areas prone to conflicts with communities.
✅Boosting tourism – Strengthening Kenya’s status as a premier wildlife destination, supporting jobs and local economies.
