As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, the government has been urged to address pressing issues affecting women, particularly the rising cases of femicide and gender-based violence (GBV).
Speaking to the media, Neila Abdhallah, Director of Sisters for Justice, criticized the government’s silence despite the increasing femicide cases across the country.
“There has been no official report from the government regarding femicide cases,” Abdhallah stated.
She warned that the growing number of femicide incidents poses a serious threat to society and called on the government to take immediate action.
“The government has ignored this issue. Femicide is real in Kenya, and it is claiming the lives of many young girls and women. Authorities must act now,” she urged.
Additionally, Abdhallah criticized female leaders in government, accusing them of failing to address the issue despite their role in representing women.
“No female leader has tabled a motion in the National Assembly or Senate regarding femicide,” she added.
On the same issue, Faith Mlanda of the International Justice Mission emphasized the need for urgent government intervention.
“It is high time the government takes decisive action to address femicide,” Mlanda said.
She called for the development of effective mechanisms to tackle the issue and urged women to report any incidents of gender-based violence.
“The only way women can seek justice is by reporting every case of injustice. This will help address femicide and ensure perpetrators are held accountable,” she added.
