The government has commenced the construction of a modern fish landing site in Mokowe, Lamu County.

Construction of the Mokowe Fish Landing site was launched by Mining and Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Ali Hassan Joho.

“This project is one of the key initiatives implemented by the State Department for Blue Economy under the Kenya Marine Fisheries and Socioeconomic Development Project (KEMFSED),” said CS Joho.

He said the fish landing site is designed to include fish processing and dispatch facilities.

“It will also be equipped with a 5-ton ice flake-making machine, a fish chilling room, a jetty for landing fish, and other essential accessories,” said Joho.

Once completed, the landing site will serve 38 Beach Management Units in Lamu County, enhancing fish storage and marketing while reducing post-harvest losses.

“My Ministry will provide the necessary training to the Beach Management Units to enable them to sustainably manage the facility and its associated resources,” said the Mining and Blue Economy CS.

Last year, the government set aside sh1.4 billion for the construction of new fish landing sites to ensure the Coast region’s fishermen reap maximum benefit from fishing activities.
