New Emergency Wing opened at Coast General

The Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital’l (CGTRH) capacity to accomodate more patients has been enhanced.

This follows the opening of the hospital’s newly renovated Emergency Department to enhance healthcare services.

The new ED with modern infrastructure, equipment, and facilities will ensure enhanced emergency response efficiency and provision of a higher standard of lifesaving healthcare.

 

Speaking while presiding over the launch of the new ED, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir said the refurbishment of CGTRH’s emergency department will improve emergency care in Mombasa and the Coastal region.

The five-month project implemented in partnership with the Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation (EMKF) focused on upgrading infrastructure, enhancing medical equipment, and optimizing workflow to improve care delivery and patient outcomes.

“The transformation of the emergency department at CGTRH is a testament to what we can achieve through strong partnerships and a shared commitment to improving healthcare services to our people,” said Governor Nassir.

Through the ‘Adopt-an-ED’ initiative, CGTRH Emergency Department got enhanced infrastructure including a new patient flow design, upgraded flooring and ceiling, and improved partitioning for better privacy.

The hospital also has modern equipment and facilities which include 21 bedheads integrated with oxygen outlets, suction, and power sources.

The department has been furnished with 15 cardiac monitors, four vital sign monitors, 21 modern ED patient stretchers, and a medical refrigerator among other critical resources.

Meanwhile, Governor Nassir has emphasized the county’s commitment to replicate the new CGTRH ED model across other healthcare facilities in Mombasa.

“The goal is to create a standardized and sustainable emergency care system that can be a model for other counties,” he said.

Also present at the launch were Emily Nyagaki, Director of Programs at EMKF, and Lilian Waihuini, Programs Manager at EMKF, who commended the county government’s leadership and support throughout the project.
