Nominated Lamu Senator Abdalla Shakilla Mohammed has called on the government to expedite the construction of a High Court in Lamu County.
Senator Shakilla noted that the national government had pledged to establish High Courts in every county, but Lamu has yet to benefit from this promise, despite the county government already allocating land for the project.
“We want a High Court in Lamu. Currently, we only have small courts in this area. President William Ruto, please fulfill your promise of establishing High Courts in every county,” she urged.
In 2023, the Lamu County Government handed over a title deed for the proposed construction of a High Court in the county.
Speaking while receiving two title deeds from the county government, Chief Justice Martha Koome confirmed that the Judiciary plans to set up a High Court in Mokowe and a Magistrate’s Court in Hindi.
She also expressed gratitude to Governor Issa Timamy for his support in providing land for the project, emphasizing that the Judiciary’s limited resources would have made it challenging to acquire land on its own.
“I sincerely thank Governor Timamy for his commitment to bringing Judiciary services closer to the people. His actions will greatly support our mission to ensure no Kenyan has to travel more than 100 kilometers to access a court station,” Chief Justice Koome stated.
