Varsity students urged to form counseling groups to combat drug abuse

University students have been encouraged to form counseling groups to help combat drug abuse in schools.

Speaking to Baraka FM, Kenya Tobacco Control Alliance (KTCA) Chairman Joel Gitali expressed concern over the rising drug use among university students. He urged them to establish peer counseling groups to support fellow students struggling with substance abuse.

Gitali noted that many students fall into drug abuse due to a lack of support systems to help them cope with peer pressure and other challenges.

“Counseling groups will assist students in addressing drug abuse through advisory activities,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of youth-led volunteer initiatives, stating that peer counseling can raise awareness and encourage those affected to seek help.

Additionally, Gitali urged parents to maintain close relationships with their children and provide support in overcoming challenges that may lead them to substance abuse.

He also stressed the need for full implementation of drug control laws in Kenya, criticizing the government for being sluggish in enforcement.

“The government must impose severe penalties on drug traffickers operating within universities and technical colleges,” he added.

Lastly, Gitali called for increased community awareness on the dangers of drug abuse, stating that many individuals misuse substances due to a lack of information on their harmful effects.

His remarks come as recent reports from the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) indicate that university students are among the most affected by drug abuse.
