Coast Senators land positions in Senate Committees

Mombasa County Senator Mohamed Faki has been unanimously elected as the Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Land, Environment, and Natural Resources. Senator Karen Nyamu (Nominated) has been elected as the Vice Chairperson.

Following his election, Faki took to his social media accounts to express gratitude to his colleagues.

“I am deeply honored to have been elected as the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Land, Environment, and Natural Resources. I extend sincere gratitude to my colleagues,” he wrote.

Other coastal leaders also secured key roles in various Senate committees. Kwale Senator Issa Boy was unanimously elected as the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Trade, Tourism, and Industrialization, with Nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri serving as Vice Chairperson.

Nominated Senator Miraj Abdillahi was re-elected as the Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT), while Senator Allan Chesang (Trans Nzoia) was elected as the Chairperson.

The elections come just days after a section of coastal political leaders urged President William Ruto to allocate more government positions to the region.

Meanwhile, Senator Fatuma Dullo (Isiolo) and Senator (Prof.) Tom Ojienda SC (Kisumu) were unanimously elected as Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, respectively, of the Standing Committee on National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations.

In the Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare, West Pokot Senator Julius Murgor was elected Chairperson, with Senator Crystal Asige serving as Vice Chairperson.

For the Senate Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights Committee, Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei was unanimously re-elected as Chair, while Senator Veronica Maina was elected Vice Chair. Senators Tom Ojienda, Dan Maanzo, and Crystal Asige joined the committee as new members.
