England legend Garry Neville has described Arsenal’s January transfer business as the main reason why the team has been left short of the title race against league leaders Liverpool.
Speaking after their weekend shock defeat against West Ham that destroyed the plan to close the gap against Liverpool, the former Manchester United defender faulted Arsenal’s decision of failing to add an attacking player knowing they had a long-term absenteeism in their current squad due to injuries.
”They thought there was no value in the market, or they couldn’t get the player that would come in and impact them but they have left themselves short, there’s no doubt about that, they have fallen short,’’ Neville said on Sunday.
The gunner’s front line was already under threat before the January transfer window following the injuries of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus who were subjected to being out for a long time but they decided to react less in the market before Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli were also sidelined.
Mikel Arteta’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat against West Ham on Saturday while Liverpool took the advantage and did their job on Sunday winning against Pep Guardiola’s side City.
Arsenal have been struggling to get goals having fewer attacking options allowing the EPL glory into Liverpool’s hands to lose.
The Reds are now 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League with 11 games to go following their victory over defending champions Manchester City.
